A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja headed by Justice Emeka Nwite has rescheduled the hearing of the bail application of Isaac Britol, an alleged whistleblower with pseudonym “Pidom”. Same Justice in a different sitting has granted N10 million bail on each of the 10 arrested #EndBadGovernance protesters who were charged with treason.
The bail hearing of Isaac Britol was slated for Wednesday 12th September but has now been postponed to 17th of September.
Britol is standing trial for alleged terrorism, money laundering, cybercrime and illegally accessing classified documents. He was arrested on 5th of August 2024 in his hotel room in Rivers State.
Similarly, the 10 arrested protesters charged with treason are expected to produce sureties who must be property owners in Abuja and must deposit documents of the properties to the court in addition to swearing to affidavit of means according to Justice Nwite’s ruling.
The defendants are to also produce one surety based in Abuja and willing to deposit their international passport and three recent passport photographs with the court.
The judge, though rejected the objections of the IGP against the bail applications, ordered the defendants not to participate in any public rally during the period of their trial.
They are to remain in prison until perfection of their bail conditions. Their trial had been fixed for 27th of September but if they can meet their bail conditions, they don’t have to be in prison till then.
The protesters and Isaac Britol do not only share similar cases, they share the same judge. All defendants were arrested during the #EndBadGovernance protest and have been charged with trying to undermine the authority of the government. However, bail hearing has been denied Britol but allowed for the protesters.
