UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued a stark warning that military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran, followed by Iranian retaliatory strikes across the region, are “undermining international peace and security.”
In a statement released through his spokesperson on Monday, Guterres condemned the escalating violence in the Middle East and called for an immediate halt to hostilities.”Failing to do so risks a wider regional conflict with grave consequences for civilians and regional stability,” the Secretary-General said.
“I strongly encourage all parties to return immediately to the negotiating table.”The warning comes amid heightened tensions following recent military exchanges that have raised fears of a broader confrontation spreading across multiple countries in the region.
Guterres emphasized that de-escalation must be prioritized to prevent what he described as potentially devastating consequences for civilian populations.
