In a move to bolster civic engagement and electoral integrity, the Common Ground for Peace, Rights and Development (CGPRD) has formally sought partnership with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Yobe State for its “Democracy Beyond Election” project.
The initiative, presented during a courtesy visit by CGPRD’s delegation to the INEC state office in Damaturu, aims to deepen voter education, accelerate the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and promote a culture of peaceful and credible elections.
CGPRD’s Executive Director, Bukar Mohammed Atiyaye, emphasized that democracy must extend beyond the ballot box. “We believe democracy should not begin and end on election day,” stated Atiyaye. “Citizens must be informed, engaged, and empowered to participate meaningfully in governance.”The project specifically targets the state’s youth demographic, leveraging CGPRD’s position as a youth-led organization.
Atiyaye highlighted the strategic importance of this focus: “With youth forming the majority of the population, their participation is critical to credible elections and accountable governance. This project is designed to mobilize and empower them to take ownership of the democratic process.”
Project Lead, Lawan Sani, outlined the initiative’s planned activities, which are designed to strengthen public confidence in electoral processes and mobilize eligible voters. In his response, the Yobe State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) commended CGPRD’s past civic efforts and described the proposed collaboration as “timely and supportive of INEC’s mandate.” He urged the organization to coordinate closely with INEC’s PVC Mobilization and ICT/Voter Registration departments.
The REC underscored the critical challenge of voter turnout and PVC collection, stating it remains vital for credible electoral outcomes. He further recommended engaging political actors and community leaders to bolster peace and fairness during elections.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to the partnership, pledging support for initiatives that enhance voter education and civic participation. The meeting concluded with mutual optimism for the partnership’s potential to strengthen democratic processes, increase PVC collection rates, and foster peaceful elections across Yobe State.
This collaboration marks a significant step in uniting civil society and electoral authorities to promote an inclusive, informed, and youth-driven democratic culture in the state..
