Kano Governor Abba Yusuf Resigns from NNPP Over Party Crisis

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing deepening internal crises and unresolved leadership disputes within the party.

The resignation, which takes effect from January 25, 2026, was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa. According to the statement, the governor communicated his decision in a letter addressed to the NNPP chairman in his Diso–Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area.

“I write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of my decision to resign my membership of the party,” the governor stated.

Governor Yusuf expressed appreciation for the platform the party provided since 2022 but said persistent internal challenges, leadership disagreements, and ongoing legal issues had created divisions that appear increasingly irreconcilable.

He noted that the situation had led to growing disenfranchisement among party members and uncertainty at both state and national levels.

The governor said his decision followed careful reflection and was taken in the best interest of the people of Kano State, adding that it was made in good faith and without bitterness.

The development was followed by a wave of resignations within the party in the state. The statement indicated that 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen also stepped down from the NNPP.

Confirming receipt of the resignation letter, the NNPP Secretary of Diso–Chiranchi Ward, Kabiru Zubairu, acknowledged the party’s internal challenges while commending the governor’s performance in office.

“We have no option than to accept the resignation of one of the most performing governors of the NNPP,” Zubairu said, praising Yusuf’s record in infrastructure, urban renewal, health, education, and economic empowerment.

The mass resignation has raised questions about the future of the NNPP in Kano, widely regarded as the party’s stronghold, and signals a significant shift in the state’s political landscape ahead of the next electoral cycle.
