A Sagamu Magistrate Court has adjourned the case against Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, the driver involved in the fatal accident that claimed two lives from boxing champion Anthony Joshua’s team, to January 20, 2026. The adjournment, confirmed by the Ogun State Police Command, allows for further proceedings following the tragic crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The Ogun State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, arraigned the 46-year-old driver on Friday. In a statement issued in Abeokuta, Babaseyi disclosed that the case had been scheduled for January 20 to allow the legal process to advance. This development follows the driver’s arrest earlier in the week by police authorities.
The fatal accident occurred on December 29, 2025, near Danco along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The crash involved a Lexus Sports Utility Vehicle, registration number KRD 850 HN, which was carrying Anthony Joshua and three other individuals. According to police reports, the vehicle collided with an illegally parked truck carrying soya beans. The impact was severe, instantly killing Kevin Latif Ayodele, 36, a British-Nigerian citizen, and Sina Ghami, 36, a British citizen. Both deceased were colleagues and training staff of the former world heavyweight boxing champion.
Preliminary investigations by the police indicate that the driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, a long-standing member of Joshua’s Nigerian logistics team, was allegedly driving above the 65mph speed limit. Police sources revealed that he lost control of the vehicle after a tyre burst during an overtaking manoeuvre, leading to the collision with the stationary truck on the hard shoulder. The force of the impact tore off the nearside section of the Lexus SUV.
Anthony Joshua and the driver survived with minor injuries. Joshua, who was seated behind the driver, was discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, on Wednesday after doctors confirmed he was clinically fit to continue recuperation at home. The driver, Adeniyi, was also discharged from a Lagos hospital after treatment for minor injuries on New Year’s Eve and was subsequently taken to the Ogun State Police Headquarters in Abeokuta for questioning.
In a joint statement signed by Mr Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, and Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Mr Gbenga Omotosho, it was disclosed that Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home in Lagos to pay their final respects before the bodies of Ayodele and Ghami were repatriated. The bodies were flown out of Lagos on a Turkish Airlines cargo flight to Istanbul, en route to London for final burial arrangements.
Meanwhile, authorities have launched a manhunt for the driver of the illegally parked truck, who disappeared from the scene after the accident. The identity of this truck driver has not been disclosed, and his whereabouts remain unknown as investigations continue.
The Governors of Ogun and Lagos States, Dapo Abiodun and Babajide Sanwo-Olu, have expressed appreciation for the public’s concern and prayers. They also conveyed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his support. The governments commended the medical personnel at Lagoon Hospital for their professionalism in treating the injured.
The accident occurred just ten days after Joshua’s high-profile boxing match with Jake Paul, which ended in a sixth-round knockout victory for Joshua. Following the crash, messages of support poured in from across the sports world, including from Super Eagles stars Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi, and Bright Osayi-Samuel.
