Nigeria Thrown into Darkness As National Grid Collapses Again

Nigeria has been thrown into blackout as the National grid collapses again, just a few days to new year.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) confirmed the development in a statement shared on X on Monday.

NISO, which oversees the transmission of power to electricity distribution companies across the country, said power generation dropped drastically to about 50 megawatts as efforts to restore the grid commenced.

According to the operator, only Abuja and Ibadan were receiving electricity supply at the time of the update, with a combined 50 megawatts available. This represents a sharp decline from the 3,660 megawatts allocated nationwide on Sunday, December 28, 2025.

NISO added that restoration work was ongoing to stabilize the grid and gradually return power supply to other parts of the country.

Confirming the event, The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) on Monday on their X handle said that there was a system collapse at 2.01 which has resulted to loss of power supply across their network.

It said, “Kindly be informed that there was a system collapse at 2.01 which has resulted to loss of power supply across our network.

“We are currently working with our partners as we hope for the speedy restoration of the grid.

“We will keep you updated as soon as power is restored.”
