Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf officially commissioned the state’s Neighbourhood Watch Corps on Tuesday, deploying 2,000 specially trained personnel to enhance local security and combat crime across the state’s 44 local government areas.
The passing-out ceremony, held at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, marked the launch of a community-based security initiative designed to serve as a vital link between residents and conventional law enforcement agencies.
According to a statement by the governors spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa, the corps consists of 1,870 male and 130 female operatives who have undergone comprehensive training.
The personnel have been strategically deployed to urban and rural communities with a mandate focusing on intelligence gathering and addressing criminal activities such as banditry, drug abuse, and political thuggery.To ensure mobility and rapid response, Governor Yusuf unveiled 88 Hilux patrol vehicles and 440 motorcycles for the corps during the ceremony.
This logistical support is intended to enable wider operational coverage and prompt intervention in security incidents.Addressing the newly commissioned officers, Governor Yusuf described the corps as “a critical pillar in our strategy to ensure peace and safety in every corner of Kano State.” He urged them to uphold the highest standards of discipline, honesty, and dedication in protecting their communities.
The governor also pledged continued investment in security infrastructure, personnel welfare, and sustained collaboration with the police, military, and other security agencies to create a unified front against crime.
The initiative received strong endorsement from Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda, who attended the event. Governor Radda stressed the importance of inter-state cooperation, particularly in securing border communities vulnerable to criminal incursions.Governor Yusuf directly linked enhanced security to economic growth, educational advancement, and social development, reaffirming that peace remains the top priority of his administration.
The launch of the Neighbourhood Watch Corps represents Kano State’s latest effort to localize security governance and empower communities to play an active role in safeguarding their neighborhoods.
