Plateau Governor Poised to Defect from PDP to APC, Aide Confirms

In a significant political realignment, Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State is finalizing plans to defect from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governor’s intention was confirmed by his Political Adviser, Mr. Istifanus Nwansat, on Monday.

Nwansat cited the deepening internal crisis within the PDP as the primary driver behind the decision, describing the party as “an unrealistic podium for political actors to contest elections.” He framed the move as a strategic choice made after careful evaluation of the political landscape.

“From the assessment and analysis of all the available options, we have concluded that the safest decision for us today, and with the least risk factor, is to move into the APC,” Nwansat stated. “That is why the governor is moving into the APC.”

The aide further explained that Governor Mutfwang’s defection aligns with a broader political strategy to harmonize with the federal government. “The governor believes that it is good and reasonable enough as a leader for him to move his people to align with the President,” he added, referencing President Bola Tinubu’s political and governance influence at the national level.

If completed, this defection would mark a major victory for the APC in the North-Central region and further weaken the PDP’s structure in a key state. It follows a pattern of high-profile defections to the ruling party ahead of the next election cycle and underscores the ongoing fragmentation within the main opposition party.
