ATBU Disvows Disruptive Group, Reaffirm Graduate Integrity

The management of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, has strongly condemned the actions of individuals who disrupted a crucial Senate hearing and has formally disassociated the institution from the group.

The statement follows an incident on Thursday, December 11, 2025, during a public hearing convened by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund. The hearing was to deliberate on a bill, sponsored by Senator Shehu Buba representing Bauchi South, which seeks to amend ATBU’s legal status from a specialized Science and Technology university to a conventional one.

In an official press release signed by the University’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Zailani Bappa, ATBU firmly labeled the disruptors as “impostors” who are not bona fide graduates of the institution.

“The ATBU prides itself on graduating disciplined students who have continuously been good ambassadors of the University across the globe for more than four decades,” the statement read. “The University is ever confident that its graduates will never engage in any action that will disrespect the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

While expressing regret over the incident that led to the adjournment, the University’s management used the opportunity to alert all stakeholders including the Senate, the media, and the public to exercise caution.

The statement urged vigilance against “any persons claiming to be graduates of the University in any further engagements with or on behalf of the University,” implying the institution has not authorized any such representation on this legislative matter.

This development marks a significant moment in the ongoing debate over the future academic focus of the prominent university, as the legislative process is now paused amidst controversy over authentic stakeholder representation.
