There is reportedly a group of demonstrators from the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) at the Unity fountain in Abuja who have gathered for a nationwide protest on Thursday.
Heavy security also surrounds the area as some protesters were prevented from entering the venue. Refusal from the protesters forced the security to open the gates to the area and the entrance has been blocked with the trucks of the demonstrators.
The requests of the protesters include the release of their four months unpaid salaries and the re-evaluation of the 2010 agreement with the Federal Government, among other requests.
Earlier
In 2022, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU), and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), went on a lengthy strike.
And while the SSANU and NASU strikes lasted four months, the ASUU strike lasted for eight months and ended on 14th October 2022.
News of the President’s directive for the affected staff to receive their 4 months salaries apparently have not been executed because the SSANU and NASU members allege that they have not been paid, unlike ASUU members.
Members of both unions have written to their members to participate in a nationwide protest on July 9 at all state chapters, with a subsequent national protest planned for Abuja today.
