Senate Screens Tinubu’s FCC Nominees, Moves To Submit Report

The Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs has completed the screening of 38 nominees seeking appointment as Chairman and Commissioners of the Federal Character Commission, FCC.

The session, held on Thursday, was chaired by Senator Allwell Heacho Onyesoh of Rivers East, who confirmed that the exercise followed President Bola Tinubu’s request for Senate confirmation of the appointees. The President’s letter was read on the floor of the Senate on 14 October 2025 before the nominees were referred to the committee for scrutiny.

The lawmakers examined each nominee’s background through security checks, including Police fingerprint reports, and verified their asset declarations with the Code of Conduct Bureau. The committee also assessed their readiness to enforce the federal character principle as required under the 1999 Constitution.

Among those screened was Hon. Ayo Hulayat Omidiran from Osun State, nominated to serve as FCC Chairman. She appeared with 37 other nominees representing all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Speaking after the session, Senator Onyesoh described the exercise as smooth and hitch-free. “The committee has diligently carried out its mandate and will submit its report to the Senate for further legislative action,” he told journalists.

He stressed the importance of the commission in promoting equity, fairness and national balance in federal appointments and resource distribution. According to him, the Senate remains committed to protecting these constitutional values.
